Pakistan opener Abdullah Fazal ruled out of West Indies and England Test series with back injury

Pakistan opener Abdullah Fazal has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against the West Indies after sustaining a back injury during training ahead of the first match, scheduled to start on Saturday. The 23-year-old sustained a lower-back injury during Pakistan's practice session at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, the venue for the opening Test that will run until July 29.

He subsequently underwent an MRI scan and was advised to begin rehabilitation, with the Pakistan Cricket Board declaring Fazal unfit not only for the West Indies series but also for Pakistan's subsequent Test tour of England, which consists of three matches and is scheduled to take place from August 19 to September 3.

Fazal emerged as a promising talent for Pakistan in recent months. He has played two Tests for Pakistan so far, both during the away series against Bangladesh in May, where he has scored 141 runs at an average of 35.25, including two half-centuries. In Pakistan's warm-up fixture against the West Indies Select XI at the Queen's Park Cricket Club, Fazal remained unbeaten in both innings, scoring 50 and 48, positioning him as a likely starter for the first Test. Pakistan captain Babar Azam expressed his feelings about Fazal's absence.

"I wish Abdullah good luck and hope he recovers well. The kind of talent he is I found very inspiring. He was very confident after his first series and his morale was very high" said Azam as quoted by ICC.

How does this injury reshape Pakistan's opening combinations?

With Fazal sidelined, adjustments come at the top of the order. Imam-ul-Haq, who missed Pakistan's most recent Test against Bangladesh with Azan Awais and Fazal opening, is now expected to regain his spot as opener. Fazal's absence paves the way for middle-order batter Awais Zafar to make his debut. Zafar was called up as a replacement for Saud Shakeel, who was not part of the squad owing to fitness concerns.

The first Test against the West Indies begins on Saturday, July 25, in Tarouba. Pakistan's three-match Test tour of England follows immediately after, starting August 19. Fazal's unavailability removes a rising prospect from both tours at a critical stage in his career.
