Padres rumors: Jon Heyman shuts down Mason Miller trade potential
As San Diego Padres star pitcher Mason Miller has been a popular trade candidate ahead of Monday’s deadline, this MLB insider would make his prediction on what the team will do with the 27-year-old. With the Padres on a winning surge as of late, there are more questions about whether the team will be buyers or sellers.
Jon Heyman spoke on MLB Network about the chances of general manager A.J. Preller and San Diego trading Miller, who currently has an outstanding 0.79 ERA and 0.79 WHIP to go along with 85 strikeouts and 28 saves in 44 games. Heyman expressed that he thinks the Padres won’t deal Miller, even saying that the pitcher is having “maybe the greatest relief season in history.”
“I’m not sure anything is quite absolute there, but I do believe Mason Miller will end up staying there. They’re one game over .500 at this point. Only two games out of the wild card, they’re obviously not winning that division. But Mason Miller has been…maybe the greatest relief season in history, right? 0.79 ERA and WHIP. Those numbers move in unison,” Heyman said.
“It is really, really incredible to watch, and he’s got three years to go, so plenty of time to decide on this,” Heyman continued. “I think it’d be very unlikely. He’ll get big offers; I think it’ll be very unlikely that [Preller] would trade Mason Miller.”

As Heyman mentioned, there are sure to be teams that offer big packages for Miller, but with San Diego winning five of its last six games ahead of Friday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, and two games out of a Wild Card spot, the team is on a roll. At a 55-54 record, the team could believe they are turning a corner.
Meaning, keeping Miller could be a sign that the team feels they could compete through the Wild Card rather than winning the AL West, with the Los Angeles Dodgers (69-40) having a commanding lead.
