Padres manager reveals honest message to Fernando Tatis Jr. amid home run drought

The San Diego Padres are playing well, but Fernando Tatis Jr. has struggled to begin the new season. Although Tatis is hitting the ball hard, the Padres star holds just a .252/.318/.304 slash line with no home runs. Padres manager Craig Stammen revealed his message to Tatis amid his home run drought during an interview with MLB Network Radio.

“You look at the evidence, he’s going to hit a home run at some point,” Stammen said. “The hard part is not worrying about or thinking about that every single time he comes to the plate. I think that’s the hardest part for him… He wants to hit one too just as much as anybody. The conversation we’re trying to have with him and he’s having with us is how can you impact the game in any way outside of hitting a home run?

“Try to keep your mind off of it so that when you get your pitch and you make a good swing on it, maybe it goes out… The home runs are going to come.”

Stammen and the Padres are seemingly not concerned about Tatis. Sure, they would love to see him hit for more power, but Tatis’ track record suggests the home runs will come at some point. For now, all Tatis can do is find ways to impact winning.

Fernando Tatis Jr. and the Padres will host the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. First pitch for the ball game is scheduled for 9:45 PM EST in San Diego.
