Padres ditch Nick Castellanos with DFA decision during Phillies series

The San Diego Padres gave Nick Castellanos a shot this season after signing him to a one-year, $780,000 contract in the offseason. However, his time with the organization was short-lived, as the club is seemingly moving on from the 14-year veteran.

Reports indicate that the Padres officially DFA’d Castellanos on Wednesday in the middle of the three-game series against his former team, the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. The 34-year-old slugger is no longer on San Diego’s 40-man roster.

“The Nick Castellanos experiment ends in San Diego after two months,” reported Nightengale. “The Padres DFA him today.”

The Padres announced that they will replace Castellanos with Samad Taylor, who was previously playing for Triple-A El Paso. Taylor has three seasons of MLB experience, but has only played in 38 career major league games.

“We have designated 1B/OF Nick Castellanos for assignment and selected the contract of INF/OF Samad Taylor from Triple-A El Paso,” said the Padres. “Taylor will wear No. 0.”

This story is currently developing, and more information will be published soon.
