Padres’ Craig Stammen provides Miguel Andujar injury update after loss to Mets
The San Diego Padres’ mettle is being tested hard by this current stretch they’re in. It’s getting so bad to the point where they’re even losing games to another fellow struggling team, the New York Mets, the way they did on Sunday in a 7-3 defeat. San Diego has now fallen to 33-31 on the season, with the Arizona Diamondbacks having overtaken them as the second-best team in the division behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Just to make matters worse, the Padres saw designated hitter Miguel Andujar, who’s provided a bit of pop for the team this season, exit the game early in the seventh inning. The Padres pinch ran for Andujar, with Bryce Johnson replacing him after a leadoff single.
The last thing the Padres need is to lose a contributor amid the team’s struggles. All they could do now is wait and see what Andujar’s status is, with manager Craig Stammen revealing after the game that the 31-year-old slugger “tweaked his hammy a little bit”, as per Annie Heilbrunn of The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Stammen decided to simply take Andujar out due to precautionary reasons, and the Padres will be evaluating his condition moving forward.
The Padres are looking towards Andujar to provide some power from the dish. He does have a season in MLB where he hit 27 home runs over the course of the whole season, but that was in 2018. He peaked eight years ago, and every bit of contribution the Padres could get from him is simply going to be gravy.
This season, Andujar has already recorded five home runs, and he’s shaping up to be a very good depth piece to have, especially for a team with contending aspirations like the Padres. However, it gets to a point where injuries to depth options can get very difficult to deal with as it thins the roster even further.
