Packers HC Matt LaFleur knows Jordan Love comments may bring Aaron Rodgers backlash

The Green Bay Packers are in the middle of training camp, preparing for the 2026-27 campaign. Jordan Love will step in once again as the starting quarterback of the franchise, with the goal of leading the club to another playoff appearance. On Monday, head coach Matt LaFleur shared praising words about Love that he knew may lead to some backlash from Aaron Rodgers.

While sitting down with Stacey Dales and Brian Baldinger of the NFL Network, LaFleur claimed that he believes his 27-year-old signal-caller is the best quarterback he’s coached in his career. LaFleur is impressed with how Love works behind the scenes and his poise on game days. However, he does credit Rodgers for playing a role in Love’s development, and admits he is sure the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback won’t like his comments.

“I’m in most of those quarterback meetings, and just the conversations and to watch his growth has been, really, a fun process,” LaFleur said about Love. “He’s a great guy to work with every day. He’s so consistent, so even-keeled, and I think that’s why in those critical moments he can go out there and perform at a high level…

“He’s gotta be the best I’ve been around in terms of protections and adjustments,” LaFleur continued about Love. “And rarely does he get out-schemed. It’s pretty remarkable. That was all foreign to him coming into the league, and I think having the opportunity to sit back and learn from Aaron and watch him do it at the level he did it, I think, was invaluable… Hey, Aaron’s gonna get mad about this, but it’s uncanny what [Love] can do at the line of scrimmage with our protection and adjustments.”

The soon-to-be eight-year head coach worked with Rodgers for four seasons before the front office traded the now-42-year-old to the New York Jets ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. Green Bay used a first-round pick on Jordan Love in the 2020 NFL Draft, but never saw the field until the 2021-22 campaign as a backup option to Aaron Rodgers.

While the four-time MVP may not like LaFleur’s comments on Monday, it’s hard to disagree that sitting behind Rodgers for several seasons helped Love’s development exponentially. Jordan Love has made steady progress as the starter in Green Bay and ended last season with 3,381 passing yards and 23 touchdowns while completing 66.3% of his pass attempts.
