Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo gets crucial injury update before Blue Jays game

The Baltimore Orioles received an important injury update on Samuel Basallo on Saturday before continuing their road series vs. the Toronto Blue Jays. The Orioles catcher remains under evaluation after leaving Friday’s game at Rogers Centre with right abdominal discomfort.

Basallo exited in the sixth inning after going 0-for-2. Manager Craig Albernaz described the move as precautionary, but Baltimore still had to protect its catching depth while waiting for more clarity on one of its most important young hitters.

The 21-year-old has become a significant piece of the Orioles’ lineup in 2026. Basallo entered Saturday hitting .273 with nine home runs, 26 RBIs, and an OPS of .833 across 52 games, production Baltimore can ill afford to lose for an extended stretch.

The Baltimore Sun’s Matt Weyrich shared the latest Saturday on X, formerly Twitter, reporting that the Orioles remained hopeful Basallo could avoid the injured list.

That hope matters because abdominal issues can become complicated for catchers. The position requires constant crouching, twisting, blocking, and explosive throws, all of which can place stress on the core.

Baltimore also made a roster move for insurance. The Orioles selected Sam Huff’s contract to add another catcher and designated Weston Wilson for assignment to clear space.

The Orioles want to avoid losing the young catcher for a longer stretch, but they also need enough healthy coverage behind the plate during the Blue Jays series.

Basallo’s injury carries added concern because he briefly dealt with right-side abdominal discomfort during spring training, giving Baltimore a reason to handle this setback carefully.

For the Orioles, the next evaluation will determine whether the issue remains a short-term scare or becomes an injured list situation. For now, the club can feel cautiously optimistic about one of its most valuable young bats, thanks to Weyrich’s update.
