Ohio State lands 4-star EDGE commitment over Indiana

Ohio State added a major piece to its defense on Saturday by landing four-star EDGE Wyatt Smith, a top-100 national prospect out of St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The 6-foot-6, 240-pound pass rusher committed to the Buckeyes over finalists that included Indiana, Missouri and Notre Dame, per a post on X by Hayes Fawcett.

The Buckeyes now have 12 commitments in the 2027 class, and the program’s focus on stacking high-end defensive line talent has become increasingly obvious over the past several months. Smith is ranked as the No. 79 overall prospect nationally and the No. 11 EDGE recruit, and earlier visited Columbus in April.

“I committed to Ohio State because of the development, their winning culture and the coaches. I feel it is the best place for me to have a chance to compete for a national championship and to develop my skills,” he said per Yahoo Sports.

Smith repeatedly pointed to development and coaching detail as deciding factors in his recruitment.

“They made a really strong impression from the very beginning. The visit gave me a detailed look at the program. They started the morning with a prayer and then went straight into meetings. The coaches went through every single player, what they needed to work on. They didn’t skip anyone. I liked that a lot.”

At the Rivals Camp in Miami earlier this year, Smith reportedly ran a 4.64-second 40-yard dash while measuring around 240 pounds. During his junior season at St. Thomas Aquinas, Smith recorded 25 tackles and 13 sacks while competing against some of the strongest high school competition in Florida.

“Coach Johnson went over my film with me and showed me what I need to work on. In just a short amount of time, he taught me a lot — about my stance, what to look for rushing the passer and how to play the run better,” he explained.

He is the son of former Missouri and NFL standout Justin Smith, a former top-five draft pick and four-time All-Pro defensive lineman.
