Nico Hoerner’s latest feat proves Cubs’ contract extension was worth it

While the Chicago Cubs are 6-6 on the season entering Friday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Nico Hoerner is seemingly having a hot start to the campaign. His first hit against Pittsburgh on Friday pretty much proves it.

Hoerner, who turns 29 in May, is one of just two players in MLB this season with a 1.0 WAR or better, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. The Cubs’ second baseman is seemingly on pace for a monster year.

“Nico Hoerner, on pace for like a 12 fWAR season, leads off the first with another hit,” said Rogers. “Guy keeps upping his game. Better every year. 1 of 2 players in MLB so far with 1.0 WAR or better.”

The eight-year veteran entered the game against the Pirates with a .333 batting average and .453 OBP while totaling 14 hits, one home run, nine RBIs, and five stolen bases. He’s been one of the most electric bats on the Cubs’ offense, and he doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

Hoerner signed a six-year, $141 million contract extension with the Cubs on Opening Day. Chicago gave him the new deal after he proved to be incredibly consistent for the club in the previous four seasons, playing 135 or more games each year since 2022. That consistency continues in 2026, as he has been playing as a star lead-off hitter for Chicago.

With how well he’s playing, the Cubs have to be feeling good about the big-time contract the front office gave Nico Hoerner. It’s still a long season ahead, but the beginning portion of the 2026 campaign has been stellar for the veteran second baseman.
