NHL rumors: John Carlson sign-and-trade could be in works with Zach Werenski twist

With the NHL officially in the offseason, there could be some movement amongst teams that are looking to improve their roster over the next few months. There are players who are possibly on the trade market, and one name that continues to pop up is defenseman John Carlson from the Anaheim Ducks.

Though the Ducks have interest in moving him, there is another player that could hold up everything that teams want their hands on, according to NHL insider Frank Seravalli.

“Preference of [Ducks] is to move the rights to John Carlson in exchange for a pick, but it sounds the handful of teams interested in jumping the queue for the top free agent D have irons in the fire at the moment. Potential of Werenski availability gives pause,” Seravalli wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Werenski is set to meet with the Columbus Blue Jackets general manager to discuss his future with the team, and wherever those talks go could depend on what happens around the landscape of the league. As of now, it still looks like there is a chance that Carlson will be moved, and the latest team that showed interest is the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“As a matter of fact, most people seem to think they would be surprised if John Carlson doesn’t end up in Tampa. He’s likely to go to the Lightning on a short-term deal for big dollars. But it would be considerably less in terms of overall dollars. Like his AAV might end up even higher, potentially than Raddysh’s, just obviously for the shorter term,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts podcast.

It will be interesting to see what other teams will put their names in the hat for Carlson’s services as the offseason continues.
