NHL rumors: Corey Perry wants to come back for a 22nd season, but it won’t be with Lightning
For the first time in several seasons, Corey Perry did not make it to the Stanley Cup. After failing to help the Lightning make it to the Stanley Cup, Perry, who just turned 41 years old, wishes to return for his 22nd season, but it likely won’t be with the Bolts, according to Pierre LeBrun’s latest piece in The Athletic.
“Corey Perry just turned 41 on May 41, but he cold me last month during the Tampa Bay Lightning’s series against the Montreal Canadiens that he isn’t ready to quit yet,” LeBrun wrote.
LeBrun explained that he waited a few weeks to decide if it was Perry’s real intention or adrenaline talking. When he followed up, the veteran winger stated that he still does. But the Lightning could not be the place where he returns to.
Perry has been part of many playoff games over his career. Yet, he still believes he has something he can contribute. Perry started the season with the Los Angeles Kings. However, they traded him to the Lightning a few months ago, and he began his second tenure with the team. Perry combined for 17 goals between the Lightning and Kings this past season.
The Anaheim Ducks originally drafted Perry 28th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. He won a Stanley Cup with them in 2007. After 13 full seasons with them, he joined the Dallas Stars in 2019. Then, Perry played for the Montreal Canadiens the following season before joining the Bolts for two seasons.
Perry started the 2023-24 season with the Chicago Blackhawks before they traded him to the Edmonton Oilers, where he helped them reach the Stanley Cup twice. Perry will look for another team to help in the offseason, with a few teams possibly needing his services.
