NFL Insider questions Giants extending GM Joe Schoen: ‘Puzzling’

With the future of New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen locked in after a new contract extension was agreed upon, many have different opinions on the matter. As Giants fans are reacting to the Schoen news, this NFL insider gives her take on the contract extension.

On ESPN’s “NFL Live,” Mina Kimes would be asked what she thinks about New York signing Schoen to a contract extension and admitted she “found it puzzling.” While mentioning Schoen paying quarterback Daniel Jones big money and letting running back Saquon Barkley go, she revealed the biggest issue with the team under the general manager.

“I’m not quite sure why they were in a rush to do this…especially when you think about this team and what it’s been underneath Schoen,” Kimes said. “I think probably the biggest problem as a GM has been the inability to fix the offensive line, which during his tenure ranks 25th in pass-block win…The best offensive lineman is one he didn’t draft, that would be Andrew Thomas, who’s a very good player, but yeah, that’s been just such an issue for this team for so long now.

Mina Kimes on Giants-Joe Schoen extension: ‘I don’t understand it’

Kimes would further talk about Schoen and how the Giants have been under him, and expressed further confusion about the rush to sign the general manager. She talked about New York’s struggles on defense and lack of wide receiver depth as being worrisome, and doubled down on not understanding the move from the team.

“And then defensively, a lot of the free agent signings have simply not worked out. You saw that this is one of the worst defenses in football last season…Malik Nabers is his best draft pick, obviously, was a top pick, so he was kind of a no-brainer, but he now is battling injury. And then you look at that receiver core, if Nabers misses any time, and you get really concerned about the depth,” Kimes said.

It remains to be seen how the Giants can look this upcoming season under Schoen and new head coach John Harbaugh.
