NCAA basketball rumors: Kansas, Arkansas in the mix for 17-PPG Colorado scorer

Transfer portal season is in full swing in college basketball, and things are really heating up after Michigan closed out the NCAA Tournament with an impressive win over UConn to win its first national title since 1989.

Now, everyone is trying to catch up to the Wolverines to dethrone them in 2027, and there are already some big names available on the open market. One of those names that might be flying a bit under the radar is Colorado guard Isaiah Johnson, who announced his intentions to enter the portal before the Buffs took part in the College Basketball Crown.

While more players are sure to enter the portal as the window opens, Johnson will likely be one of the best guards available this offseason. As of now, Kansas, Texas and Arkansas are three teams to watch for the standout freshman, per Joe Tipton of On3 Sports.

“Isaiah Johnson arrived at Colorado as an underrated recruit and had a strong freshman season, averaging nearly 17 PPG,” Tipton wrote. “His recruitment has been fairly quiet to this point, but there’s been buzz around Kansas, Texas, and Arkansas.”

Johnson was a bit of a pleasant surprise this season for a Colorado team that desperately needs his scoring punch this year. He came in as an undersized freshman at just 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, but he quickly proved to be a crafty scorer that understands how to navigate defenses at all three levels.

Not only did Johnson lead Colorado in scoring at 16.9 points per game, but he was relatively efficient for a small guard at 48.6% from the floor and 37.8% from the 3-point line. He also averaged three assists to just 1.4 turnovers a night, so whoever lands him will be getting a plug-and-play starting point guard.

Both Kansas and Arkansas will be looking for guards this offseason with Darryn Peterson and Darius Acuff Jr. both presumably headed to the NBA Draft. While Johnson may not be the overwhelming force those two were, he would be a quality addition to any starting lineup and is one of the biggest gets on the market this offseason.
