NBA rumors: Insiders tease Kawhi Leonard’s interest in Spurs reunion alongside Victor Wembanyama

With the offseason in full swing, it appears the Los Angeles Clippers could be in a position to shop Kawhi Leonard around to see what kind of packages they could get in a possible trade. However, the rumor mill suggests there are only two teams Leonard is even remotely interested in, with one of them being the San Antonio Spurs.

Bobby Marks hinted as such during the 2026 NBA Draft broadcast on ESPN. The famed insider didn’t explicitly name the Spurs as a team the 34-year-old is interested in joining, but did suggest that his former teams could be keeping tabs on Leonard’s availability this offseason.

“Extension eligible, he’s got two years left. I mean, I think there’s a lot of playoff teams keeping an eye on what happens with Kawhi Leonard,” Marks said on ESPN.

He was then asked which organizations would be interested, and he replied, “Maybe his former teams.”

The only other teams the two-time Defensive Player of the Year has played for in his career are the Spurs, from 2011 to 2018, and the Toronto Raptors in the 2018-19 season, where he led the franchise to a championship win.

While the idea of teaming Kawhi Leonard up with Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio is tantalizing, it might not be an acquisition the Spurs are interested in. NBA insider Jake Fischer claimed that the front office may prefer maintaining its assets due to the success Wembanyama is bringing to the club. Additionally, Leonard may have burned a bridge with the organization when he left in 2018.

“Sources close to the situation tell ‘The Stein Line’ that, when it comes to potential trade talks, there are only two other teams that Leonard would consider signing an extension with: The two teams he played for before becoming a Clipper. Toronto and San Antonio,” wrote Fischer.

“It is not yet clear how the Spurs would receive the idea of a reunion with Leonard, given the manner in which they are flourishing in the Victor Wembanyama Era … on top of the sides’ infamously messy parting in the summer of 2018.”

Kawhi Leonard just wrapped up his 14th season in the NBA. The seven-time All-Star played 65 games for the Clippers, averaging 27.9 points (career-high), 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.9 steals per contest while shooting 50.5% from the floor and 38.7% from deep.
