NBA rumors: Insider drops Thunder’s Evan Mobley trade revelation, but there’s a Cavs problem

The Oklahoma City Thunder have dynasty aspirations, but their plans to repeat as champions were halted by the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals. Even so, the team has a roster well set up for the future, and they have the firepower to make a blockbuster trade if they so desire. The Thunder are loaded with the young prospects and future draft capital that could entice just about any team to trade them a superstar. One player they’ve been linked to, according to Sam Amick of the Athletic, is Evan Mobley.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were also eliminated in the conference finals, and members of the Cavaliers have often been involved in trade rumors because of the team’s financial status for years now. Plus, Mobley seems like a perfect fit for what the Thunder do. He is a versatile big man who can score from every level on offense and protect the rim on defense. He is similar to Chet Holmgren in that regard, but some would even consider him an upgrade over the Gonzaga big man after Holmgren’s conference finals struggles against Victor Wembanyama. However, Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman shut down any rumors about Mobley being moved this offseason.

“[Mobley] was consistently our best player throughout the playoffs,” Altman said. He added, “There’s no urgency to get out of [the aprons] just to get out. Because then you’d be shedding contracts and good players to do it.”

Altman clearly views Mobley as a part of the team’s future. He is 24 years old and has an All-Star nod to his name. The frontcourt pairing with Jarrett Allen has also proven to be a daunting task for opponents to go up against inside. As a member of a loaded 2021 NBA Draft class, Mobley has found arguably the most sustained team success among his draft class peers, too.

The Thunder don’t need to make drastic moves. They might be viewed as championship favorites for next season even if they run it back. They certainly could make a splashy move in the offseason, though; it just likely won’t be for Mobley.
