Following South Carolina State’s successful protest of South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, a Georgia HBCU is rallying against a local politician’s commencement speech appearance.

Per a report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Morehouse School of Medicine students are protesting the appearance of U.S. House Representative Richard McCormick. McCormick, a Republican, is an alumnus of the institution, having received his Doctor of Medicine from Morehouse School of Medicine in 2010.

However, students at the institution believe that his views, as well as his votes in Congress, go against the school’s mission of increasing diversity in the medical field. Along with protesting his appearance on the campus of the Atlanta-based HBCU, the students released an open letter against his participation in the commencement ceremonies, citing reasons why they are against his appearance, as well as demands for what the students want the institution to do next, and requested action if he is not removed as commencement speaker.

The letter also cites its sources, containing quotes from McCormick, as well as his votes on Capitol Hill and their impact. The students request that the Morehouse School of Medicine reconsider McCormick’s invitation and replace him, and that in the future, the graduating class participate in the selection of the speaker.

“This decision goes beyond political disagreement. We hope leadership understands that the hurt and frustration surrounding this decision stem not only from differing opinions but from the feeling that student voices, lived experiences, and trust in institutional leadership are being overlooked,” the letter reads in part.
