MLB rumors: How Giants are complicating White Sox’s ’50/50′ No. 1 pick decision

When the Chicago White Sox make their selection at No. 1 of the 2026 MLB Draft, they’re hoping to land a long-term impact player. But whose name will be called still hasn’t been determined.

It seems likely that the pick will be either Roch Cholowsky or Grady Emerson. But if a team like the San Francisco Giants makes a stronger bonus offer to either player, that would complicate the White Sox’s decision further, via Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.

“The industry buzz is that Cholowsky vs. Grady Emerson is edging closer to a true 50/50 internally for Chicago,” McDaniel wrote. “I still think Cholowsky wins a toss-up and because of that, he’s probably 55% or 60% more likely to be the pick.”

“The other complication here is the competition from below. The Giants have been rumored all spring to be aggressively trying to land Cholowsky or Emerson at No. 4 via an overslot bonus,” he continued. “They just traded Patrick Bailey to Cleveland in a deal that included getting the 29th pick, which comes with just under $3.3 million more pool money.”

It’s highly unlikely Cholowsky or Emerson are available when the Giants pick at No. 4. But if they make an over slot offer, it could lead to either prospect forcing their way down the board and to San Francisco. With how much talent each posses, it’ll take a strong offer. But the Giants at least haven’t ruled it out, and the White Sox must be aware of that potential strike.

With San Francisco struggling under Tony Vitello, they shook things up by trading Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Guardians. They now have more money to work with in the draft. If the Giants want to make a splash, they could use that money to build their farm system around Cholowsky or Emerson.
