MLB rumors: Giants ‘not budging’ on Logan Webb despite Braves, Astros trade pitches
San Francisco Giants pitcher Logan Webb is one of the big names being floated around before the trade deadline on Monday. He has garnered the attention of multiple teams, most notably the Atlanta Braves and the Houston Astros.
It has been reported that the Braves and the Astros are seriously pursuing the 29-year-old Webb, who is coming off a third straight appearance in the All-Star Game.
The Giants have already dealt pitcher Tyler Mahle to the Braves, while pitcher Robbie Ray and infielder Luis Arraez are expected to be moved in the coming hours. The team, however, is firm on holding on to Webb, according to a report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.
“It will be awkward, Webb acknowledges, watching Ray, second baseman Luis Arraez, starter Tyler Mahle, and perhaps outfielder Heliot Ramos walk out of the door before the deadline, and not come back. They’ll be gone while Webb stays. He’s the only veteran player who’s untouchable, the Giants say, with $47 million remaining on the final two years of his five-year, $90 million contract,” wrote Nightengale.
“It hasn’t stopped teams like Houston and Atlanta from asking about Webb’s availability, but the Giants aren’t budging, knowing if they are ever going to be a contender again, after nine losing seasons in the last 10 years, they’ll need Webb to anchor that rotation.”
Webb admitted that it would “hurt” if Ray gets traded, noting that the former Cy Young winner has helped him “tremendously” since he was promoted to the Giants in 2019.
Webb, who won a Gold Glove last season, is sitting on a 6-7 record in 19 starts this season, tallying a 3.93 ERA, 93 strikeouts, and a 1.12 WHIP.
He said he wanted to stay in San Francisco for the remainder of his career. Well, so far, so good.
