Ben Johnson’s Kyle Monangai injury update teases short absence
The Chicago Bears need to take care of business during the 2026 season. Chicago needs to get over the hump in the playoffs and will do whatever is needed to make that happen this fall. Fortunately, it appears that one of their young offensive stars avoided a major injury during the early days of training camp.
Bears head coach Ben Johnson told reporters on Monday that Kyle Monangai is dealing with a soft tissue injury, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“We’re taking it day-by-day,” Johnson said, per Schefter. “It should be on the shorter side.”
Monangai was absent from training camp practice on Friday with an undisclosed injury. It is safe to assume that this soft tissue injury is what kept Monangai out of action.
It is good to hear that Monangai’s injury is not that serious. Chicago will be counting on their second-year running back to play a big role on offense this fall.
The 2025 seventh-round pick had an excellent rookie season. He logged 169 carries for 783 rushing yards and five touchdowns while sharing the backfield with D’Andre Swift.
Bears fans should not have to worry about Monangai missing the season opener next month. And in the meantime, Monangai’s carries in training camp can go to players further down the depth chart.
In fact, Chris Emma explained that veteran Salvon Ahmed is “getting a good audition” with Monangai on the bench. Ahmed has been running with the second team offense during recent practices.
The regular season is still more than a month away. That should give Monangai plenty of time to get healthy and back to practice before Week 1.
It will be exciting to see what Chicago can accomplish during the second year of the Johnson regime.
