Mike McCarthy’s 6-QB bar on Steelers’ 53-man roster drama

The Pittsburgh Steelers are currently gearing up for their preseason finale, which will take place on Thursday against the Buffalo Bills. The Steelers are coming off an ugly home loss to the New York Jets, in a game in which quarterback Will Howard struggled mightily to get anything going.

The Steelers are still trying to figure out what their final QB depth chart will look like heading into the season, and recently, head coach Mike McCarthy weighed in on the debate.

“I’d keep six QBs in the building if it worked,” said McCarthy, per Mike DeFabo of The Athletic on X, formerly Twitter.

The quote comes amid speculation that the Steelers could have four quarterbacks on their final 53-man roster this year, including Howard, rookie Drew Allar, veteran Mason Rudolph, and starter Aaron Rodgers.

Rudolph is expected to earn the primary backup role behind Rodgers this year, with both Howard and Allar vying for the third spot on the roster. Keeping four quarterbacks on the roster is a rarity in today’s NFL, but if the Steelers see enough to like about both Howard and Allar, they could opt to keep both around as opposed to letting them potentially be scooped up by another team in free agency.

Meanwhile, Steelers fans are hoping that the backup quarterback debate is an afterthought this year, assuming Rodgers can stay healthy and productive in his age-42 season. Rodgers and McCarthy are hoping to rekindle the magic of their days together with the Green Bay Packers this year.

The Steelers’ regular season is slated to kick off on September 13 vs the Atlanta Falcons at home.
