Mike Greenberg hits 24-team CFP expansion with stern warning
With the talk of the College Football Playoff (CFP) expanding to 24 teams, after the bracket recently went from four to 12 teams, there have been many naysayers on the idea. As the conversation around the CFP expansion will continue, analyst Mike Greenberg doesn’t hold back when expressing his thoughts on the matter.
Speaking on ESPN’s “Get Up,” Greenberg would give his thoughts on the landscape of college football if the 24-team expansion were to come to fruition. He would challenge the idea that good teams missing the CFP is a “bad thing” and that the expansion to 24 teams, it means that the regular season is useless.
“I will say this, I don’t know what ESPN does or doesn’t want, but what I can tell you with certainty is that the idea that good teams, championship-worthy teams, get left out of the playoffs is a good thing, not a bad thing. If you put every single team that might win the championship into the playoff, then, to Paul’s point, you might just as well not play the regular season to begin with,” Greenberg said.
"If we live in a world where Ohio State and Michigan rest their starters for that game at the end of the season, because they've got the potential of five playoff games still sitting in front of them, then college football, as we have known it, ceases to exist." – Mike Greenberg pic.twitter.com/QBLgyvRBmn

How the CFP expansion will lead to college football ‘ceasing to exist’
Greenberg wouldn’t stop there when talking about the 24-team CFP expansion that looks to be a near future for the sport. The analyst envisions a scenario where top teams sit their starters at the end of the regular season with many playoff games ahead.
“If we live in a world where Ohio State and Michigan rest their starters for that game at the end of the season, because they’ve got the potential of five playoff games still sitting in front of them, then college football, as we have known it, ceases to exist,” Greenberg said. “So I don’t have a vote in any of this, other people do, and they’ll make the decisions they make based on a lot of reasons that, candidly, have nothing to do with what’s in the best interest of the game itself.”
At any rate, there’s no doubt that the conversation around the CFP 24-team expansion will continue throughout the offseason.
