Michael Penix Jr. throwing video sets stage for heated Tua Tagovailoa battle

The Atlanta Falcons are getting ready for one of the offseason’s most important training camp battles. Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa will compete for the team’s starting quarterback job later this offseason. One recent video suggests the battle could start on fairly even ground.

The Falcons posted a video on Tuesday showing Penix throwing a pass to Drake London at a recent practice. That video suggests that Penix should be ready for a training camp battle with Tagovailoa this summer.

In fact, a team spokesperson told ESPN’s Marc Raimondi that Penix is participating in Phase 2 of the Atlanta’s offseason program. During that phase of the offseason, NFL teams can give their players individual and group instruction. However, they are not allowed to have full practice that include 11-on-11s or even 7-on-7s.

Penix suffered a season-ending ACL injury during the 2025 season. His availability for Week 1 is still unknown, but he’s shown some positive signs in his recovery. The video of him throwing passes is one more good sign.

Penix has struggled with injuries during his first two seasons in the NFL. He’s only managed 2,757 passing yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions in 14 games played.

Meanwhile, the Falcons brought in Tagovailoa to compete with Penix during NFL free agency. Tagovailoa became a cap casualty in Miami at the end of the Mike McDaniel era.

Tagovailoa has a longer history of success in the NFL than Penix, which could help him win the starting job. But he also has a history of concussion injuries that could put his career in jeopardy if he suffers another concussion.

It will be interesting to see which player can pull ahead of the other during training camp later this summer.
