Mets star Juan Soto reveals ‘appreciative’ conversation with Carlos Mendoza after firing

The New York Mets continued navigating a turbulent season Saturday after Juan Soto revealed he reached out to Carlos Mendoza following Friday’s managerial change.

The Mets head into Saturday afternoon at 34-48 after Friday’s 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, a result that added to the frustration around a disappointing 2026 campaign. The front office moved on from Mendoza, but Soto made clear the former manager still carried respect inside the clubhouse.

Soto signed his historic 15-year, $765 million contract in December 2024 to become the face of the franchise, and Mendoza helped ease his transition into Queens. The connection between the two made the departure more personal for one of the Mets’ most important voices.

Soto then explained what he told Mendoza during the phone call:

“I did. Um, not much, but you know, how much I really appreciate what he did for me, you know? And like, he was one of the guys who helped me to feel comfortable in this clubhouse and welcome me in the best way. So I was just thanking him for that.”

The comments offered another view of Mendoza’s tenure. Although the Mets made a leadership change, Soto’s remarks suggest Mendoza maintained player support despite the club’s slide.

Interim manager Andy Green now inherits a roster searching for answers. Soto’s appreciation also highlights the players as the clubhouse moves on. For New York, the next response must come on the field.
