Mets rumors: Latest Freddy Peralta report hints that trade is even more realistic
The MLB trade deadline isn’t until August 3, but the rumors are already heating up for Freddy Peralta and the New York Mets. With the club near the bottom of the rankings in the National League, the front office could elect to become sellers by the deadline. But that’s just one of the factors that could lead to Peralta being dealt away this season.
Reports indicate that the 30-year-old right-hander could be a trade candidate, as it sounds like the Mets and Peralta do not plan to negotiate a long-term contract, according to MLB insider Chelsea Janes of SNYtv. If that’s the case, then Peralta would become a free agent after the 2026 campaign. New York is in a position to possibly deal him away to at least get something in return in the trade market.
“People familiar with thinking on both sides say the Mets and Peralta do not plan to discuss a potential extension or even the parameters of a potential free agent deal until after the season,” reported Janes. “In fact, people familiar with Peralta’s thinking have said all along he would rather not talk about his contract status during the season, preferring instead to ingratiate himself with teammates and focus on his place in his current clubhouse.”
Janes also suggests that, due to Freddy Peralta struggling so far this season, he won’t even be able to negotiate a new deal at his highest value. Meanwhile, the Mets may end up trading the nine-year veteran if they continue losing games leading up to the deadline. Either way, it appears to be a situation to watch in New York.
While Peralta has been solid throughout his career, the 2026 campaign has not been a successful one. In 78.0 innings pitched through a league high 14 starts, the two-time All-Star owns a 4.04 ERA and 1.321 WHIP with 79 strikeouts.
