Mets pitcher Clay Holmes’ cryptic injury update after leaving start comes with optimism
The New York Mets face early concern in their rotation after Clay Holmes exited Friday’s start, putting his status at the center of the team’s latest injury update. During a matchup vs. the Athletics, the Mets lost one of their most reliable arms early, adding uncertainty to an otherwise steady stretch of pitching.
Holmes departed in the sixth inning with left hamstring tightness, which surfaced after he allowed a single. Manager Carlos Mendoza and a team trainer visited the mound before escorting the right-hander off the field. At the time of his exit, the Mets trailed 1–0, and Tobias Myers entered in relief.
His early exit also raised immediate concern within the clubhouse, as teammates and coaches await further clarity on his condition heading into a critical stretch of the schedule.
Before leaving, Holmes turned in a solid performance. He threw 81 pitches in over 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on five hits while recording three strikeouts and three walks.
Following the game, Holmes addressed the injury with cautious optimism, offering an encouraging early outlook, according to an Associated Press report published on ESPN’s official website.
“Hopefully, we’re in a good spot. It doesn’t seem too major,” Holmes said. “I’m pretty optimistic with it and I feel like I’ll be able to make my next start, but ’til we kind of wake up tomorrow and see where we’re at tomorrow, we don’t really know.”
The Mets ultimately fell 4–0 to the A’s, but the primary focus remains on the 33-year-old veteran pitchers’ health moving forward. The club is expected to evaluate him over the next few days before determining his next steps.
Holmes has been a significant contributor to the Mets rotation this season. He entered Friday’s game with a 2–0 record and a 1.50 ERA.
As the Mets navigate early-season injuries, maintaining rotation stability will be critical. While uncertainty remains, Holmes’ initial assessment of his injury offers reason for optimism as the team awaits further updates.
