Mets’ Craig Kimbrel breaks silence on 8th inning disaster vs. Rockies
The New York Mets appeared to have things well in hand on Thursday against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, enjoying a 2-0 lead thanks to Andy Ibáñez sacrifice fly, which was followed by Tyrone Taylor’s RBI single to give them a 2-0 lead.
However, not only did the host Rockies rebound to knot the score, but they would soon gain the upper hand thanks to some heroics by Jake McCarthy. Not only did he hit the game-tying RBI double, but then he would also make it a miserable relief appearance for New York’s Craig Kimbrel, blasting a grand slam in the eighth inning and giving Colorado a 6-2 lead, which would ultimately finish as the final score.
Speaking after the game, Kimbrel said that not only did he feel he earned a strikeout against Willi Castro, but that a check swing he didn’t fully swing was ruled a strike, resulting in a walk, and that it set up the unfortunate subsequent grand slam from McCarthy.
“Trying to get a strikeout, felt like I did,” Kimbrel said, via SNY. “They didn’t feel like he went on the check swing. And it turned into a walk which turned into a grand slam.”
The Mets saw their three-game win streak come to a close by missing their chance to sweep the Rockies, and now sit at 14-23 through the first 37 games of the season; the Rockies, meanwhile, improved to 15-23.
New York will have to put the bitter feelings of how the series against the Rockies ended when they head to the desert for a three-game set against the Diamondbacks.
