Mets’ Carlos Mendoza drops truth bomb after defeating Diamondbacks
The New York Mets defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks in extra innings by a final score of 4-3 on Tuesday. A big part of the reason the Mets won was the bullpen, as they held the D’Backs scoreless after starting pitcher Freddy Peralta allowed three runs across 4.2 innings on the mound. Relievers Devin Williams and Luke Weaver pitched well in the final innings of the game. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza commented on their performances following the win, via SNY.
“They are used to pitching in high-leverage situations,” Mendoza said. “That’s what we brought them in for, to lock games down, to keep games in there for us, and today was a perfect example. They went through some good hitters.
“Devin continued to execute pitches, and then for Weaver in extra innings with the ghost runner, just keeping the game there. They’re used to it… They’re going to continue to get big outs for us.”
The bullpen will be important throughout the season. Weaver and Williams could end up creating one of the better eight/ninth inning duos in the entire sport.
The Mets are 7-4 overall. They are playing well for the most part. However, the team recently placed Juan Soto on the injured list. Nevertheless, New York leads the National League East at the moment.
The Mets will host the Diamondbacks on Wednesday and Thursday as well. New York is looking to continue playing a quality brand of baseball despite Soto’s injury absence. First pitch on Wednesday between the Diamondbacks and Mets is scheduled for 4:10 PM EST.
