Mets’ Brett Baty has disastrous defensive inning amid 8-game losing streak

The New York Mets are going through it right now. They have now lost 9-straight games for the longest losing streak of the 2026 MLB season. Dating back to the end of the 2025 season, missing the postseason by one game, the Mets have been one of the worst teams record-wise for the last few months of regular-season play.

During the Friday afternoon game in Chicago, the Mets had a disastrous inning, led by Brett Baty, not being able to handle first base.

The Mets are testing Baty’s play at first base after the obvious signing of Bo Bichette. Bichette is the third baseman, and Baty and Mark Vientos are taking reps at first after the departure of Pete Alonso.

Baty isn’t having a great offensive season either, but it cannot be easy trying to do both at a high level when you are uncoachable. It does not seem like Baty is fully adjusted to playing first base yet, as it is not an easy position to play. The 4th inning was a disaster for the Mets, but this loss is not on him. The team is all out of sorts right now. Juan Soto is on the IL, and Francisco Lindor and Bichette are not hitting the ball at the level they are accustomed to.

Ken Rosenthal recently spoke about Lindor’s slow start, and he doesn’t seem to find an answer to why it’s happening.

“As for Lindor, no one seems to have a good feel for what’s going on here. Whether it’s missing spring training, or whether it’s simply a mental slump, if you can call it that,” said Rosenthal. “Or, if something is going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about, that is somehow affecting him. This does happen with players all the time.”
