Mets already being urged to pursue Alex Cora after Carlos Mendoza firing

The New York Mets are cleaning house after firing manager Carlos Mendoza on Thursday. A call has already been put out for the Mets to bring on a new manager.

On Friday, MLB analyst Jim Bowden issued a call for New York to hire former manager Alex Cora.

“The #Mets should now do everything they can to try and land Alex Cora as their next long-term manager starting in 2027,” he posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Ultimately, Mendoza was fired due to consistent underperformance, including a recent four-game series sweep by the Chicago Cubs. New York is now 34-47, in last place in the National League East.

Cora was fired as the Boston Red Sox manager after a 10-17 start to the season. He played for New York from 2009 to 2010. In his first year, Cora played in 82 games and batted .251 with one home run and 18 RBIs. Cora then re-signed for the 2010 season, but was let go in August 2010 after batting .207 with no home runs and 20 RBIs.

Cora played in MLB for 27 seasons, from 1998 to 2011. He played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Guardians, Boston Red Sox, the Mets, Texas Rangers, and Washington Nationals. As a manager, he was with the Red Sox from 2018 to 2019 and from 2021 to 2026.

In 2017, Cora was a bench coach with the Houston Astros when they won the World Series. A World Series win that was tainted due to the sign-stealing scandal.

Cora has won three World Series titles as a player and manager (2007 with Boston, 2017 with Houston, and 2018 with Boston).
