Mercury make wrong kind of history in ugly loss to Lynx

The Phoenix Mercury badly need a lifeline right now after getting crushed by the Minnesota Lynx, 111-77, for their sixth straight defeat at Mortgage Matchup Center on Monday.

The Mercury dropped to 2-9, tying the Connecticut Sun for the league’s worst record. The Lynx, on the other hand, notched their fifth consecutive win and improved to 7-2, leading the Western Conference.

Phoenix had a lackadaisical start, allowing Minnesota to score 32 points in the first quarter. Everything went downhill from there for the Mercury, who trailed by 17 points at halftime, 67-40. They never recovered in the second half, as the Lynx imposed their will.

ESPN’s Alexa Philippou noted that Phoenix made the wrong kind of history in the lopsided defeat.

“Tonight’s 34-point defeat for the Mercury is their second-largest home loss in franchise history, and largest since 2012,” wrote Philippou on X.

Fans did not hide their dismay over Phoenix’s embarrassing setback.

“Wow. What a joke,” said @ughcolten.

“111 (points) in 40 minutes is tough to give up. That said, a team of senior citizens just made it happen. Just a team of slow, unskilled players,” added @CrappyOpinion1.

“Does the team even care anymore? When is Nate (Tibbetts) gonna make some necessary changes? Respectfully, but loyalty isn’t gonna win games, some people will have to go. Something gotta’s give,” said @_blkthot.

“Wow, (Jovana) Nogic played the whole quarter and got eight points. Maybe start playing her a lot more,” suggested @debroyna.

“Need a new system. Nothing else will save them,” commented @GOATofGOATS_MMA.

Kahleah Copper led the scoring for the Mercury with 18 points, although she only shot 5-of-13 from the field.

Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner were held to a combined eight points.

The Mercury will try to snap their losing skid against the Seattle Storm on Wednesday.
