Mavericks rumors: Dallas’ latest stance on Klay Thompson buyout amid Heat pursuit, revealed
The Dallas Mavericks are under new management, with Masai Ujiri stepping in to become the team’s new president of basketball operations. Ujiri is known for having one of the smartest minds in basketball, although he still has his work cut out for him as he tries to get the Mavericks back to winning ways.
This offseason, the Mavericks seem to still be caught between two timelines. They have veteran pieces that suggest that they are ready to compete now, but their roster is also full of young guys who may need a year or two more to marinate. This leaves Klay Thompson, who is in the final year of his contract making $17.5 million, in a bit of an awkward spot.
Thompson’s name has been in trade rumors for quite some time now, and it becomes easier for the Mavericks to trade him away since his contract is expiring. However, the Miami Heat, an team in pursuit of Thompson, might find it preferable to acquire him once he’s a free agent after securing a buyout.
Alas, according to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavericks remain steadfast in that they are showing “little interest to this point” in a Thompson buyout, as per Mavs Film Room on X.
This makes a modicum of sense since the Mavericks prefer to scour what the trade market can net them for the veteran sharpshooter. Shooting is always going to be a valuable commodity in the NBA, and Thompson, even in his declined state, can make threes with the best of them (he made 2.9 triples per game last year on a 38.3 percent clip).
A buyout may be Dallas’ last resort if they fail to get anything for Thompson, but they won’t be in a rush anyhow — especially if the Heat became more desperate as they look for more depth around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
