Marseille v Newcastle prediction
Newcastle make the trip to the south of France for tonight’s clash against Marseille brimming with confidence following their 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
The weekend’s victory was Eddie Howe’s side’s fifth in their last seven games in all competitions, and saw them get back to winning ways after a disappointing defeat at Brentford prior to the international break.
The Magpies will be disappointed by their league position domestically, with Saturday’s win just their fourth in the Premier League, leaving them 14th and only four points above the drop zone.
The Tyneside club have fared, curiously, much better in the Champions League though, currently sat sixth in the league phase table, ahead of the likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool and Barcelona, having won three of their four games so far in the competition.
The Geordies will be aware that their away form does need to take a drastic turn for the better if they are to have success this season, having won only once on the road in seven matches so far, and head to France having lost each of their last three, all against sides in the bottom half of the Premier League.
Marseille will also head into tonight’s clash in confident mood following a thumping 5-1 win away at Nice, their third league victory in a row, which keeps them just two points behind Ligue 1 leaders PSG as they chase a first league title since 2010.
Managed by former Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, the French side prepare for the visit of Newcastle having won 10 of their 12 last home games in all competitions, losing only one, but that defeat did come in their most recent Champions League outing.
Competing in the Champions League for the first time in three years, the Phoceans have lost three of their four matches in the competition so far, their most recent game, a 1-0 home defeat to Atalanta, leaving them down in 25th in the table and outside the play-off positions.
The two sides have met only twice before, across two legs in the UEFA Cup in 2004, drawing the first leg 0-0 at St James’ Park before a Didier Drogba brace in second leg knocked the Magpies out at the semi final stage, only for Marseille to lose 2-0 to Valencia in the final.
Newcastle, despite their struggles in the league, head to Marseille in good form following their win over Manchester City on Saturday and in the top six of the Champions League table, while their opponents tonight have struggled on their return to the continent’s elite cup competition.
The Marseille having lost three of their four Champions League games, the Magpies will feel confident of securing a fourth win in five European games this season, and should have squad to get the better of their French opponents – I’m predicting a 3-1 away win.
