Mariners rumors: Fans won’t like Ken Rosenthal’s Seattle-Tarik Skubal trade report

Most MLB fans would surely love to see their favorite team trade for Tarik Skubal. Teams such as the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are likely going to be in the conversation, but could the Seattle Mariners pursue the two-time Cy Young winning pitcher? Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic recently shared a report that Mariners fans will not like.

“The Mariners seemingly would be another possibility for Skubal, but do not expect to pursue the former Seattle University standout, according to people briefed on their plans,” Rosenthal wrote in a recent article.

The concern seems to be the rental element of the situation. Seattle has multiple starters under team control for seasons past the 2026 campaign. Acquiring the Detroit Tigers star would force the Mariners to surrender top prospects as well as possibly a starter from their current rotation for likely only a half-season of Skubal. Skubal is expected to command a historic contract in free agency, and the Mariners may not want to risk a massive trade only to potentially watch him sign elsewhere after the season.

The Mariners will likely still be active before the trade deadline. They could look to upgrade both the pitching staff and the lineup. Unless something unexpected occurs, it seems as if Seattle will not be in the Tarik Skubal sweepstakes. Of course, anything could end up happening. Teams have changed their minds in the past.

It will be a situation to monitor. The Mariners certainly need to make a couple of roster upgrades if they want to make a deep postseason run this year.
