Mariners receives JP Crawford injury update during rehab assignment
A few weeks ago, the Seattle Mariners lost JP Crawford to a wrist injury, and he has been unable to play ever since. Now, there is some new news, and the M’s have given an update about his injury status, according to Brent Maguire of MLB.com.
“Began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Aug. 20, going 0-for-3 at the plate and playing five innings at shortstop,” Maguire reported.
Maguire added that manager Dan Wilson indicated that the team wants him to get some time down in Triple-A to build up to a return. It’s not the first time Crawford has been out this season. When they lost him the first time, it was about a month before he returned. At the time, Crawford was dealing with a triceps injury. That could also be the reason why the M’s are being a little patient with his recovery, because they would rather have him stay on the field.
Crawford is batting .212 with 10 home runs, 30 RBIs, and 38 runs in 88 games this season. Ultimately, he has struggled to get the ball off the bat. This is down from last season, when he hit .265 with 12 home runs, 58 RBIs, and 69 runs. Another factor in his recovery could be the M’s playoff hopes.
The Mariners are currently 60-68, three games behind the final wild card spot. While they still have a chance, they have struggled mightily all season. Their offense has sputtered, ranking 28th in batting average, 24th in on-base percentage, 30th in runs, 16th in home runs, and 29th in slugging percentage. When Crawford returns, the M’s will want to ensure he can lock in and be ready for a battle down the stretch.
