Mariners call up Braves waivers claim who could make his MLB debut

Heading into a key AL West clash with the Houston Astros, the Seattle Mariners’ bullpen will receive another shakeup. Rising lefty Jose A. Ferrer, acquired over the winter for former top prospect Harry Ford, will be placed on the paternity list. According to the Mariners’ communications department, right-hander Domingo Gonzalez will be recalled from Triple-A to replace him. If Gonzalez makes an appearance, it will be his major league debut.

“Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander announced today the following roster moves: Domingo González (#46), RHP, recalled from Triple-A Tacoma,” posted the team’s communications department. “José A. Ferrer, LHP, placed on Paternity List.”

Gonzalez was claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Braves last August. Before joining the Braves, Gonzalez spent five years in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organization. In 12 relief appearances for Tacoma, the 26-year-old has a 1.80 ERA and 14 strikeouts. He’ll likely serve in a lower-leverage role in the Mariners bullpen, unlike Ferrer. If he impresses with Seattle, there’s a decent chance that the big-league club keeps him around.

Ferrer is 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA in 20 innings pitched. Two saves and 16 strikeouts have shown the growing trust that manager Dan Wilson has in the former National. As the Mariners look to capture this key series against the Astros, the bullpen needs to step up. Star closer Andres Munoz hasn’t been his usual self. Eduard Bazardo’s blown save on Sunday was a sting in their series loss against the Chicago White Sox. Last season, the Mariners finally broke through the Astros’ stranglehold on the AL West mountaintop. Now, both clubs are struggling. Will Seattle emerge from this latest series the victor? Or will they slide downwards towards Houston’s current spot in the division’s basement?
