Marcos Senesi pushing for free transfer with two Premier League clubs interested

Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi is hoping to agree terms with a new club before the season ends, talkSPORT understands.

The Argentine is out of contract at the Vitality Stadium in the summer, and the Cherries have been aware since the turn of the year that he will not be signing a new deal.

A verbal agreement between Senesi and Bournemouth was in place heading into the January window, with all parties comfortable he would not exit mid-season.

This proved to be the case, with the 28-year-old staying put despite being previously targeted by Chelsea, as well as interest from further afield.

Sources have told talkSPORT that Senesi was originally keen to explore a move abroad and had initial interest from both Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

He is still being tracked by Italian clubs, but there is also Premier League interest from Tottenham and Manchester United.

Senesi is available as a free agent this summer, and despite turning 29 this May, it hasn’t stopped a large number of teams exploring a move.

The centre-back has made 121 appearances for Bournemouth since joining in 2022 and a natural parting of ways is anticipated after he informed the club he planned to enter free agency.

Where would Senesi fit in best?

Chelsea’s interest in Senesi is historical and comes with the club searching for a starting centre-back to partner Levi Colwill.

The Blues are prepared to sign more experienced players this summer and potentially older ones as a consequence.

The west London club haven’t made any approach for Senesi for the summer and are believed to be prioritising different profiles as they look for height and strength.

This was one of the reasons they signed Tosin Adarabioyo in 2024, but the ex-Fulham man has struggled for starts at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are looking for another centre-back regardless of whether Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven depart, especially given Radu Dragusin’s future is also in doubt.

However, much of Spurs’ recruitment rests on their Premier League survival, having dropped into the relegation zone over the weekend.

According to sources familiar with the player’s thinking, Senesi is not prepared to drop into the Championship.

Spurs will also have Luka Vuskovic available next season, who is set to return from his season-long loan at Hamburg, with sources telling talkSPORT the club view the Croatian as part of their long-term plans.

As for Manchester United, they are in the market for another centre-back even after Harry Maguire renewed for an extra 12 months.

While the Englishman’s contract extension makes this less pressing, the Red Devils are still prepared to move on market opportunities.

United plan to put the bulk of their summer spend on midfield and a left attacker, and could explore defensive free agents as a result.

Elsewhere, Liverpool have not yet made any formal contact with Senesi, but the Argentine was a player current sporting director Richard Hughes signed from Feyenoord in 2022 when working at Bournemouth.

Any move for Senesi will likely depend on Ibrahima Konate, who is out of contract in the summer and is yet to sign a new deal at Anfield.

Despite reports Konate is close to extending at Anfield, talkSPORT understands there has been no breakthrough in talks yet.

Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet is set to join the Reds in the summer in a deal worth £55million plus £5m in add-ons, but they could still look to sign another centre-back.

Senesi has also started all-but one of Bournemouth’s Premier League matches so far this season.

His only absence from Andoni Iraola’s side came against Everton in December as he served a one-match ban for accumulating five yellow cards.

His importance at the Vitality Stadium was increased in the summer after several defensive departures from the club.

Fellow centre-backs Ilya Zabarnyi and Dean Huijsen were sold to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, respectively, for a combined £104.5million, while Milos Kerkez joined Liverpool.

Despite this, Senesi has played a key role in a Bournemouth side that has impressed this season, and currently sit 11th in the Premier League.
