Mammoth acquire Sebastian Cossa in draft trade with Detroit
The Utah Mammoth acquired 23-year-old goaltender Sebastian Cossa from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft on Friday night. Utah had previously obtained that selection from the Boston Bruins as part of the JJ Peterka trade. Detroit used the pick to select Kamloops Blazers forward JP Hurlbert.
Cossa is coming off the best American Hockey League season of his career with the Grand Rapids Griffins. During the 2025-26 campaign, he compiled a 26-8-4 record, a 2.33 goals-against average, a .915 save percentage and five shutouts in 39 games. Grand Rapids finished with a 51-16-5 record, the second-best in the AHL, after opening the season with a remarkable 26-1-1-1 stretch through the end of December. Cossa also represented the Griffins at the AHL All-Star Game in both 2025 and 2026.
Across four AHL seasons, Cossa has posted a 70-33-19 record with a 2.46 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage and eight shutouts in 123 regular-season appearances. In 11 Calder Cup Playoff games, he owns a 5-6-0 record with a 3.04 goals-against average and a .893 save percentage.
Originally selected 15th overall by the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL Draft, Cossa has appeared in one NHL game. He made his debut on Dec. 9, 2024, against the Buffalo Sabres, earning his first NHL win after stopping 12 of 14 shots. He also played 46 ECHL games for the Toledo Walleye in 2022-23, recording a 26-16-1 record, a 2.56 goals-against average, a .913 save percentage and four shutouts.
Before turning professional, the Hamilton, Ontario, native starred with the Edmonton Oil Kings, compiling a 71-16-7 record, a 2.12 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage and 14 shutouts in 98 WHL games from 2019-22. He led the WHL in goals-against average (1.57) and save percentage (.941) in 2020-21 before helping Edmonton win the 2021-22 WHL championship with a 16-3 playoff record, a 1.93 goals-against average, a .919 save percentage and five shutouts. Cossa also won a gold medal with Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship and played alongside current Mammoth forward Dylan Guenther during all three of his WHL seasons.
The Mammoth are expected to give Cossa an opportunity to compete for the backup goaltending role behind Karel Vejmelka after Vitek Vanecek became an unrestricted free agent.
