Luka Doncic repeats injury revelation that’s bad sign for return vs. Thunder

The Los Angeles Lakers dropped Game 1 of their Western Conference Semifinal series against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, and it’s looking like help won’t be on the way anytime soon. Speaking with media for the first time since the injury, Luka Doncic reiterated his recovery timeline that would seemingly put him past the Lakers’ current series with the Thunder for a potential return to the lineup, as per Dan Woike of The Athletic.

Luka Doncic admitted that even following the additional injury treatment he received in Spain, that his potential timeline for a return to the Lakers’ lineup was eight weeks as given by doctors. Doncic is currently approaching the five week mark since the initial injury. A full eight weeks would take him past the Lakers’ series against the Thunder.

It’s obviously not what Lakers fans want to hear, but if that timeline is adhered to, the only way Doncic would realistically return during the playoffs would be if the Lakers can get past the Thunder without him. That is no easy task.

Doncic initially sustained the injury back on April 2 against this same Thunder team. While he’s been begun smaller ramp up activities such as running, he has yet to be cleared to participate in contact activity during practice.

Reports had surfaced in recent weeks suggesting that Doncic could potentially make his return when this series shifts back to Los Angeles, but that’s looking increasingly unlikely at this point. In the meantime, the Lakers will prepare for Game 2 against the Thunder on Thursday.
