Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu opens up on ‘learning experience’ amid post-injury slump
The New York Liberty suffered their fourth loss in five games after falling to the Golden State Valkyries, 76-67, at Chase Center on Sunday.
Despite their strong lineup, the Liberty have yet to find their footing this season. In particular, Sabrina Ionescu is amid her least productive campaign, as she has struggled to regain her form after sustaining an ankle injury in the preseason.
She missed their first five games and sat out seven more outings due to a back injury.
The four-time All-Star admitted that reintegrating into the lineup has not been easy, as reported by Liberty reporter Myles Ehrlich.
“I’ve never missed a month in a season unless it was my rookie year, and I missed the whole season. Obviously, it’s been a learning experience for me, especially early on in the year, where you’re trying to find your identity as a team and build chemistry with players you haven’t played with, and obviously, a new coach, new system, so all of that is new,” said Ionescu.
The 28-year-old is averaging career-lows across the board: 9.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 34.6% field goals, and 27.3% three-pointers. She has yet to score 20 points.
The Valkyries held her scoreless in the first half, the fourth time it has happened this season.
Ionescu, however, can explode at any time, and she only needs one strong game to get back on track.
Jonquel Jones recently called out her teammates for not playing with enough heart.
With the loss to the Valkyries, the Liberty fell to 12-8.
New York will return to action on Tuesday against the Las Vegas Aces.
