Liberty gets positive Satou Sabally injury update for Mercury clash

The New York Liberty came into the season with high expectations after a huge free agency period that saw them re-sign the likes of Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart, as well as bringing in Satou Sabally to round out the starting lineup.

Unfortunately, the Liberty have struggled with injuries throughout the beginning of the season. Ionescu missed the first few games of the year with an injury that she suffered during the preseason, and now she is dealing with a back problem. Sabally’s Liberty debut was delayed due to a cyst and a delayed recovery from a concussion, but she is finally getting healthy.

Now, it looks like Sabally is good to go. She is completely off of the injury report ahead of the Liberty’s game against the Phoenix Mercury on Friday night, via Annie Costabile of The Athletic.

“Satou Sabally is off the Liberty’s injury report ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Mercury,” Costabile reported on X, formerly Twitter. “Sabrina Ionescu (back soreness) is out.”

Sabally has played in just three games so far this season, and the Liberty have been managing her minutes. However, she has still been productive when she has been on the floor. In 15.3 minutes per game in those three games, Sabally is averaging nine points a night despite shooting just 34.8% from the field. Once she has her legs under her, that percentage should come up and she should go back to being one of the top scorers in the league.

As Sabally gets more and more games under her belt, new Liberty head coach Chris DeMarco will be able to rely on her for more minutes. This Liberty team, which currently sits at just 4-4 through eight games, needs Sabally on the floor as much as possible to boost its defensive versatility and add another shooter on the perimeter.

With Sabally now totally off the injury report and seemingly feeling a lot better heading into Friday’s game, maybe this is where the former Phoenix Mercury star sees a bump in minutes as New York tries to get back above .500.
