Le’Veon Bell recalls wild Adam Gase story from Jets days
Former NFL star Le’Veon Bell had his best years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, getting multiple nods to the All-Pro Team and the Pro Bowl. But no one can say his time with the New York Jets was not interesting, to say the least.
After six years with the Steelers, Bell signed with the Jets in 2019 on a four-year, $52.5 million contract. There were high hopes that he could help elevate the team. But that did not happen. He only lasted two seasons with the Jets.
On “Get Got Pod with Marshawn Lynch & Mike Robinson,” Bell recalled a story during his time in New York in 2019. Bell said then-coach Adam Gase, who was in his first year with the Jets, approached him ahead of their game against the Cincinnati Bengals, who had a 0-11 record at that time.
“He says, ‘Look, man, it’s going to be a lot of rain on Sunday. I need you to understand, we got to put the ball in the air, bro. We got to put the ball in the air 40-plus times.’ I said, ‘What?’ I can’t make this up,” said the former running back.
“He said, ‘Think about it. When you pass, the receivers, they know where they’re going, but the DBs (defensive backs), they don’t. So we can make big plays because the DB might slip, and the receivers know where they’re going, and think about it, a big play. Sam (Darnold) might hit up 400 yards Sunday.’ I’m like, ‘Bro, what?'”
A quick research showed that the Jets lost to the Bengals, 22-6, with Darnold going 28-for-48 for 239 yards. Bell had four receptions for 35 yards.
“We got our a** whooped. We got our a** smacked. We lost to the Bengals. It was the Bengals. They had not won zero games that year,” added Bell, who called out Logan Paul for “ducking” him in their boxing deal.
The four-time All-Pro wanted the Jets to trade him in 2020. But when the team found no takers, Bell was waived. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in the offseason.
Like Bell, Gase only spent two seasons with the Jets, amassing a 9-23 record.
