Legislators attempting Hail Mary to keep new Bears stadium in Illinois
After making the playoffs in 2025, the Chicago Bears are trying to keep their spot at the postseason table for the foreseeable future. But if the Bears are going to be hosting playoff games consistently, they’d like to have their stadium plans in place.
Arlington Heights has been top suitor for the franchise’s new stadium. However, the legislation didn’t receive enough votes to move forward. Legislators are now trying to figure out a new plan to keep the Bears in Illinois, via Christopher Placek of the Daily Herald.
“The property tax break legislation backed by the Bears to build a stadium in Arlington Heights doesn’t have the votes to pass in Springfield,” Placek wrote. “But legislators were working overnight to craft an alternative proposal to keep the football franchise in Illinois — maybe even still in Chicago — and prevent the team from bolting to Indiana.”
“One such plan being discussed at the Capitol on Sunday — the final day of the spring session — would give municipalities including Arlington Heights the ability to create their own public stadium authorities,” he concluded.
This new plan would allow for a tax-exempt public stadium to be built. That type of legislation has already been passed in Arlington Heights’ biggest competitor for the Bears in Indiana. Illinois’ government will continue to fight to keep the franchise in state while Indiana will do everything in their power to bring the Bears to their new home.
Ultimately, the franchise is trying to figure out their best plan moving forward stadium wise. They want a venue that could one day host a Super Bowl. There still appears to be numerous hurdles before the Bears make any final announcements let alone break ground on that new stadium.
