Latest Juan Soto injury update will catch Mets fans’ attention

The New York Mets have been without Juan Soto since the 10-3 win over the San Francisco Giants on April 3. While he is expected to remain out for at least another week, Soto received an update revealing some of the progress he has made in his road to recovery.

Reports indicate that the 27-year-old is swinging and practicing fielding indoors already, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Soto is not running just yet, though, and it does not appear he will be running anytime soon.

“Juan Soto (calf) has been swinging a bat indoors and playing catch, but he’s not close to beginning a running program,” reported DiComo. “He’ll continue to participate in light baseball activities while he heals.”

The Mets initially placed Juan Soto on the 10-day IL on April 4. So, the earliest he can come off is mid-April. However, his return will largely depend on how his calf strain heals within that time frame. Either way, the injury is deemed minor, which is good news for Soto and the organization.

In the meantime, the Mets will continue relying on Carson Benge, Brett Baty, and Tyrone Taylor rotating in left field. Manager Carlos Mendoza is playing Taylor and Baty in left and right field on Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, while Luis Robert Jr. holds it down in center field.

Soto was hot at the plate before sustaining the injury. In 34 plate appearances so far this season, the four-time All-Star owns a .355 batting average and .412 OBP while recording 11 hits, one home run, and five RBIs.
