Lakers’ JJ Redick gives props to Deandre Ayton for two-way play vs. Rockets
JJ Redick had high praises for Deandre Ayton following the star center’s performance in the Los Angeles Lakers’ Game 1 win over the Houston Rockets in the first round on Saturday night.
Ayton took part in his playoff debut as a member of the Lakers. It marked his first time playing in the postseason since 2023 when he represented the Phoenix Suns.
Ayton needed to deliver a strong game with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves absent due to injury. And that he delivered. In 35 minutes of action, he finished with a stat line of 19 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, and a block. He shot 8-of-10 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.
Redick reflected on Ayton’s display after the game, per reporter Mike Trudell. His remarks were clear on the center’s outing, showing how Los Angeles remains resilient when Ayton is playing at his best.
“He was great on both ends. We’re at our best when he’s playing at a high level,” Redick said.
How Deandre Ayton, Lakers played against Rockets
Deandre Ayton came through in a big way for JJ Redick and the Lakers as they beat the Rockets to begin the first-round series.
Los Angeles massively benefitted from Houston not having Kevin Durant due to injury. As a result, the Rockets’ offense was out of rhythm as it sorely missed its leading scorer and key playmaker.
Shot selection and ball movement made the difference in this matchup. The Lakers prevailed in both categories as they shot 61% from the field and created 29 assists. It wasn’t the same for the Rockets as they only made 38% of their total shots and dished out 24 assists.
Five players scored in double-digits for Los Angeles in the win, including Ayton. Luke Kennard led the team in scoring with 27 points and four rebounds, LeBron James came next with 19 points and 13 assists, Marcus Smart had 15 points and eight assists, while Rui Hachimura provided 14 points and three steals.
The Lakers will look to take a 2-0 series lead when they host the Rockets in Game 2. The game is set to take place on April 21 at 10:30 p.m. ET.
