Lakers’ Austin Reaves refuses to sugarcoat his forgettable Game 1 performance
Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves has always exuded a joyful aura. He has an easy smile and likes to joke around with his teammates, especially Luka Doncic.
However, he was a picture of dejection after the Lakers bowed to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 108-90, in Game 1 of their second-round series in the playoffs at Paycom Center on Tuesday.
It was hard for Reaves to be happy after scoring just eight points on 3-of-16 shooting. He bricked all five of his three-point attempts. He also had a team-high four turnovers.
The 27-year-old guard missed a month due to an oblique injury. But he does not want to make it an excuse for his forgettable performance, as reported by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
“I mean, nobody cares about that. I got to go out there and play better,” said Reaves.
Everybody on the Lakers needs to play their A-game if they want to upset the juggernaut that is Oklahoma City. The defending champions are too good, too deep, and too locked in. They will always find ways to capitalize on an opponent’s struggles.
With that said, Reaves’ talent is undeniable. He can explode any time. But he needs to regain his confidence, as he is only shooting 31.2% in three games in the playoffs. He is 2-of-17 from long distance.
LeBron James said they trust Reaves to bounce back.
“We know he’s going to make shots and make plays, but that’s tough,” said James, who had 27 points, four rebounds, and six assists.
“Obviously, we’re trying to fast-track him, getting back on the floor and doing the things that he was doing before the injury.”
Game 2 is on Thursday.
