Knicks’ OG Anunoby sets new NBA record with historic playoff efficiency

The 2026 NBA Finals was a star-making series for the New York Knicks. There, Jalen Brunson cemented his status as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Knick of all time. Karl-Anthony Towns became a New York hero for his heroics against Victor Wembanyama. Perhaps the biggest leap, though, was OG Anunoby’s rise to prominence as one of the best two-way players in the league.

Most fans knew about Anunoby already, whether its by memes or due to his two-way potential. In the NBA Finals, though, Anunoby flashed his full potential. When the Knicks were struggling, Anunoby was there to bail the team out. His ability to make shots in tough situations saved New York multiple times in the Finals. After the series ended, Anunoby finished with the best True Shooting percentage in the playoffs for any player.

True Shooting percentage is an advanced metric of a player’s shooting efficiency. This metric is meant to be a catch-all metric that shows how well a player has shot from the field, from the three-point line, and from the free-throw line. During the Knicks’ playoff run, Anunoby posted a True Shooting percentage of 72.1%, 2.5 points higher than the previous record held by Donovan Mitchell during the Bubble Playoffs.

Anunoby truly broke out in this year’s playoffs. The Knicks forward averaged 20.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, becoming a crucial lynchpin of the team’s offense. While Towns and Brunson garnered a lot of attention on offense, Anunoby quietly kept the offense running with timely threes and shot creation late in the shot clock.

In the Finals, Anunoby was arguably the Knicks’ second or third-most important player. He averaged 21.2 points in the series, posting a TS% of 71.4%. His magnum opus came in Game 4, where he helped orchestrate the biggest comeback in Finals history. Anunoby scored 33 points as the Knicks overcame a 29-point lead, including a game-winning block and the eventual game-winning tip-in.
