Knicks’ Josh Hart gets real on playing his role in NBA Finals push
The New York Knicks took Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday night, and Josh Hart’s role helped explain why their formula traveled. The veteran guard did not need scoring volume to shape a 105-95 win vs. the San Antonio Spurs.
Hart scored only three points on 1-of-5 shooting, but his fingerprints were everywhere. He grabbed 15 rebounds, added six assists, collected four steals, and finished with a game-high plus-22, giving the Knicks crucial extra possessions and steady defensive activity throughout the opener.
That performance matched the identity the Knicks have built during their Finals push. Hart gave them energy, rebounding, and pace without drifting outside the job the matchup required on every possession.
NBA TV shared Hart’s comments Thursday on X, formerly Twitter, after the veteran discussed the selflessness needed to bring energy every night on the Finals stage.
“Humility, and a willingness to sacrifice.”

Hart then explained why chasing points or recognition cannot drive every player in a championship setting:
“It’s easy to get wrapped up in human nature of, you know, wanting to get recognition, wanting to score the ball, or wanting to show people what you can do on the biggest stage, and you know that’s not everyone’s calling, and not everyone’s assignment, and I know for me that’s that’s not really my assignment.”
The quote gave the veteran’s Game 1 stat line a clear meaning. Hart embraced the less visible work, cleared the defensive glass, and helped fuel transition chances without forcing offense or disrupting the Knicks’ spacing.
This approach matters with Game 2 set for Friday. The Knicks can take a 2-0 series lead on the road if they maintain the same edge.
For New York, Hart’s message reflected more than humility. It showed a team-wide understanding that sacrifice can matter as much as shot-making during the Knicks’ 2026 title pursuit.
