Knicks’ Jalen Brunson begs Mike Brown to put ‘Who Let the Dogs Out’ to bed

The New York Knicks are everywhere after winning the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs in five games and ending their 53-year title drought.

On Monday, Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and coach Mike Brown guested on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” to talk about their magical run. Fallon is among the big-time celebrities who have long rooted for the Knicks.

While much of the praise is being given to Brunson, Towns, and the rest of the players—quite deservedly so—huge credit must also go to Brown, who silenced the critics after being maligned and belittled in recent years.

Brown, who is in his first season with the Knicks, deserves more respect. Brunson, however, has one teeny-weeny request from Brown: Retire the “Who Let the Dogs Out” song.

“We’ve got to put that to bed,” said Brunson, eliciting laughter from everyone.

Throughout the season, the 56-year-old Brown had been leading the Knicks in singing the popular song in the locker room as a way to hype them up. He revealed the story behind it.

“I was an assistant (coach) in San Antonio many moons ago, a reporter who asked me a question, he said, ‘What did you learn during your time here when you coached the seven-year-old Dogs Flying Football team?’ I said, ‘I learned the cheer,'” recalled Brown, referring to his kids’ flag football squad.

“We used to have the parents all come in the huddle, all the kids come in the huddle before every game, we put our hands in, and I go, ‘Who let the dogs out?'”

Brown was with the Spurs from 2000 to 2003, learning the ropes from then-coach Gregg Popovich.

Brown may have to follow Brunson’s simple advice and retire his battle-cry. After all, he already had his moment, when the Knicks—the dogs he let out—happily indulged him during the trophy ceremony in the NBA Finals.
