Ken Rosenthal uses Buster Posey to make Hall of Fame case for Will Smith

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a perennial Hall of Famer in catcher Will Smith. One of his biggest media cheerleaders for his plaque to be in Cooperstown is Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

On Tuesday, Rosenthal published a piece outlining the case for Smith and comparing him to catcher Buster Posey. He mentioned that his colleague Jayson Stark had included Smith among his list of active players destined for the Hall of Fame last July.

Rosenthal stated that since that time, Smith has won a third World Series with the Dodgers.

At the same time, Rosenthal said that Smith is already at Buster Posey’s level and poised to exceed it.

“Smith wasn’t a Rookie of the Year or MVP like Posey was, but he already has matched Posey in World Series titles,” Rosenthal wrote. “His offensive profile is similar to where Posey’s was at the same point of his career. And he figures to play longer than Posey, who retired at 34. Smith is signed through his age 38 season.”

He then highlighted numbers from both men through 752 career games.

“Posey: .859 OPS, 102 HRs, 446 RBIs

Smith: .831 OPS, 131 HRs, 458 RBIs”

Posey and Smith have been compared for their high-production offenses, ability to control the pitching staff, and overall discipline. Posey played with the San Francisco Giants from 2009 to 2021. He became a seven-time MLB All-Star and three-time World Series champion.

Posey is currently the President of Baseball Operations.

Smith has played with the Dodgers since 2019. In addition to three World Series wins, he is a three-time MLB All-Star.
