Josh McDaniels takes blame for Patriots’ Super Bowl disaster before Seahawks rematch

The New England Patriots have a chance at revenge to begin the regular season. New England faces off against Seattle in Week 1 after last year’s crushing defeat in Super Bowl LX. One Patriots coach is taking responsibility for that loss ahead of the team’s upcoming rematch against the Seahawks.

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels took the blame for the team’s poor showing in the Super Bowl last season.

“They out-everythinged us in the game,” McDaniels said on Sunday, per Patriots reporter Andrew Callahan.

McDaniels also said to “start with him not doing a good enough job” when specifically asked about New England’s pass protection during the Super Bowl.

The Patriots did not do a good job of protecting QB Drake Maye during the Super Bowl. Seattle sacked Maye six times and had him constantly under pressure. Offensive line issues plagued New England throughout the playoffs, resulted in Maye getting sacked 20 times in the postseason.

As a result, the Patriots made an effort to rebuild their offensive line this offseason. They brought in Alijah Vera-Tucker from the Jets during free agency. New England also drafted Caleb Lomu in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

It is fair to say that the Patriots are a much more complete team, especially compared to how they looked during the Super Bowl. New England also added playmakers on offense, trading for A.J. Brown and signing Romeo Doubs to upgrade their wide receiver room.

Patriots fans should have some optimism that they can hang with the Seahawks in Week 1. Getting some revenge could give New England some valuable momentum to start the regular season.

It will be fascinating to see how New England attacks Seattle during the 2026 season opener.
